Meakarta or Sampoorna ragas of Karnatic Music

A Raga which contains all the seven (saptha) swaras in a systematic order is called a "Melakarta Raga" or "Sampoorna Raga".

There are 72 Melakarta or Sampoorna ragas in Karnatic music tradition. These 72 ragas are arranged in the form of 12 different Chakras (Circles). Each Chakra is named according to its significance. Each Chakra contains 6 different ragas. A table is formed by compiling all the 12 Chakras. According to the nomenclature of swaras used in each raga, we can find 36 "Shuddha Madhyama Ragas" and 36 "Prati Madhyama Ragas".

The following shloka in sanskrit indicates names of all the ragas :

इन्दुनेत्राग्निस्च वेदबाणरुतुवः

ऋषि॔वसुब्रह्मच दिशिरुद्रादित्याः ।

एतानि द्वादशरागचक्राणि इत्याहुः ।
